Gerrit van Houten

The Groene Kamer of the Fraeylemaborg features a regularly changing selection of the work of artist Gerrit van Houten. Gerrit van Houten (1866 – 1934) was born into a prominent entrepreneurial family in the city of Groningen . He showed talent for drawing from an early age. He mainly painted landscapes, still lifes and seascapes, as well as portraits, interiors and views of the city of Groningen. All were made before his 24th year, when a severe mental illness put an end to his artistry. The extensive body of work he had created in that short period was lovingly preserved by his family.
