I am I – fashion transformed

28 March to 30 August 2026

Clothing has always been important to me. It’s a direct expression of who I am.

With this statement by Grietha Scheers in mind, visual artist Ellen Korth embarked on a special photography project. After getting to know Grietha during a visit to the garden of the former vicarage in Warffum, a bond developed between the two women. A fascination with snowdrops and wild tulips brought them together; shared life experiences strengthened their personal bond.

Ellen created a photo series about Grietha from Groningen and her clothes. Their love of clothes connects them, but their approach to them differs greatly. Grietha enjoys wearing her extensive collection of dresses, coats and hats. For her, clothing is something to be shown off and experienced. Ellen, on the other hand, has a very different relationship with clothing. Over the course of many years, she has turned her own worn clothes into new works of art, as part of a personal ritual. In this way, Ellen captures her identity in sculptures.

In the manor house, the story of Grietha and Ellen is linked to that of Princess Mieke van Panhuys, daughter of the last lady of the manor. Her memories of the significance of clothing during the time she spent at the manor as a young girl come to life in her childhood dresses and a portrait that Ellen has painted of her.

Made possible in part by the Dutch Costume Association.

An exhibition across three venues

Coach House, Fraeylemaborg Estate

The photo series, which Ellen turned into a book, forms the starting point of the exhibition. Follow the artist as she explores her fascination with textiles, clothing and Japanese art.

The Fraeylemaborg

In a number of period rooms, the story of Grietha and Ellen is explored in greater depth and linked to that of Lady Mieke van Panhuys.

Warffum Vicarage

The former vicarage in Warffum, recently transferred to the Hendrick de Keyser Association, is also part of the exhibition. An installation by Ellen Korth is on display in this medieval stone hall house, which Grietha and her husband Mijnard Scheers have restored with great care and attention over the past decades. The installation in the vicarage can be viewed by individual visitors on Wednesdays from 13:00 to 17:00 throughout the duration of the exhibition. For groups of up to 15 people, by telephone appointment:  +31 6 51853342.
